We Tried to Do Athens in One Day (With Kids). It Went Exactly Like You Think.
This is the part where I say we “took in the sights” and “soaked up the culture,” but really it was me (Ryan) sprint-walking around Athens with my two daughters while they fact-checked me in real time. (“Dad you just lie.” Love that for me.)
If you want the simplest version: here’s the exact one-day order we did—breakfast, Panathenaic Stadium, street snacks, Temple of Olympian Zeus, then the Acropolis (in the rain).

Stop 1: Breakfast First (Because Athens Is Basically the Sun)
We started with the most important Greek landmark of all: a bakery situation involving croissants the size of small ottomans. Chocolate. Nutella. Sausage. Coffee. And outside? Felt like 100 degrees. Athens was not easing us into anything. It was like, “Welcome. Hydrate. Also, good luck.”
We hopped on the bus and got moving, because if you’re doing Athens in one day with kids, your choices are basically:
- Start early
- Carry snacks
- Accept that someone will complain (possibly you)
Stop 2: Panathenaic Stadium (AKA “Why Are These Steps Rock-Climbing?”)
Next up: Panathenaic Stadium—the place that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Very cool. Very historic. Also very “let’s see how fast Dad gets winded.”
The steps feel less like “staircase” and more like “optional bouldering route.” But once you’re up there, the views are absolutely worth it—especially looking out toward the Acropolis like, “Yep. We’re going there. Later. In whatever weather chaos is coming.”
Street Snack Intermission: The Bag of Nuts That Could Feed a Soccer Team
On our route we grabbed ginormous bags of nuts. I think we paid about 4 euros—not saying that’s the official nut rate of Athens, just reporting from the front lines of our family snack economy.
Pro tip: when you’re doing a one-day Athens sprint, snacks aren’t optional. Snacks are strategy.
Stop 3: Temple of Olympian Zeus Area (Excavation Vibes)
We rolled through the Temple of Olympian Zeus area and it really does give off that “somebody is definitely down there with a tiny paintbrush dusting history” vibe. You can almost hear the gentle brushing. Like: shhh, the ruins are sleeping.
Stop 4: The Acropolis + Parthenon… in the Rain (Because Of Course)
We made it to the big one: the Acropolis and the Parthenon. And because Athens wanted maximum drama for the episode, it started raining. So there we are: umbrellas out, listening to a guide, trying to take it all in while also not sliding off ancient rocks like a cartoon banana-peel scene.
There was a slip/fall moment (yes, I checked, she was okay). But consider this your friendly, non-funny (okay, slightly funny) reminder:
- Those rocks get slick in the rain.
- Watch footing, especially with kids.
- “Do not fall” is a great family travel motto.
Bonus: The Museum We Didn’t Film In (So Many Rocks, So Little Time)
We also hit the Acropolis Museum and it’s packed with incredible “rocks” (statues, carvings, you know—legendary rocks). But we didn’t film inside because photo/filming rules can vary by area.
In general: assume restrictions exist (for example, no flash and no tripods), and follow whatever’s posted or communicated onsite.
What We’d Repeat (And What We’d Do Differently)
We’d repeat:
- Starting with a serious breakfast (croissants = morale)
- Panathenaic Stadium (historic + fun energy)
- Street snacks to keep everyone from turning feral
- Acropolis/Parthenon no matter what the sky is doing
We’d do differently:
- Respect the weather more (Athens: hot, then wet, then both?)
- Slow down a tiny bit so it’s less “Amazing! Next!”
- Maybe add extra “don’t slip” reminders… for Dad too
